Fishermen off South Africa accidentally catch a juvenile (young) Great White shark and land it on the beach. Realising their mistake, they battle to get the shark back into deeper water without anyone getting injured. Luckily, they manage to free the shark and it swims off to safety, but they could have been in trouble as Great White Sharks are a protected species and it is against the law to catch them.
It was especially important that they released the young shark as Great White Sharks take a long time to reach sexual maturity. This means that for every young shark caught – that is another shark who won’t live to reproduce and have baby sharks to increase the population.
